FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 20 (FENA) - The Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH PA) Borjana Krišto, the Speaker of the House of Peoples Ognjen Tadić and their deputies Šefik Džaferović, Safet Softić and Bariša Čolak met today with the Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Thomas Greminger, who is on a two-day official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated the PR Department of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly.

At a meeting dedicated to the general political situation in BiH, the state of reform and functioning of the authorities, the participants jointly assessed that the role of the OSCE Mission in BiH was very constructive and useful. In this regard, they emphasized that the Mission of this international organization enjoys the trust of citizens and institutions with whom the OSCE has been working closely for many years to implement various projects in order to better their functioning.

They also warned of the fact that several months before the general election, there is a negative political atmosphere and rhetoric that hamper the work of the institutions and do not contribute to the faster implementation of reforms on the European and Euro-Atlantic path of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At the meeting, they expressed different views regarding the adoption of amendments to the Election Law of BiH. In this regard, Mr. Greminger emphasized that solutions must be the product of the agreement and consensus of politicians in BiH and added that representatives of the international community can help in the negotiation process, but will not impose solutions.

They expressed the expectation that the BiH Parliamentary Assembly would soon adopt the Law on Conflict of Interest in the BiH Government Institutions, which would become an important instrument in the fight against corruption.

Members of the Collegiums of both houses of the BiH PA have appealed to senior OSCE officials to continue to engage strongly in protecting the human rights of BiH citizens primarily in the sector of education, with the aim of ensuring that the Constitution guarantees the right to the mother tongue. In this regard, Mr. Greminger emphasized that the issue of education would continue to be at the top of the OSCE Mission's priorities in BiH and that the Mission would continue to work diligently to prevent segregation and discrimination against children in the educational process.

They confirmed that the OSCE Mission would remain engaged and ready to provide any type of assistance with the aim of achieving constructive and pragmatic solutions that will benefit the institutions and citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
