MOSTAR, July 5 (FENA) - The "Most Beautiful Villages of Bosnia and Herzegovina" project was presented today in Mostar in order to inform the general public and representatives of BiH municipalities and cities about the rules and application process.

It is a project of the Association for the Development of Rural Tourism ‘Alterural’, which is implemented in cooperation with USAID.

The concept of "the most beautiful villages" was created in 1981 by the French association "Les Plus Beaux villages de France (LPBV)" in order to popularize rural settlements by preserving their heritage and promoting their economic potential, and in the meantime similar projects were launched by other countries, such as Italy, Switzerland and Lebanon.

Sanja Imanić from the Association for the Development of Rural Tourism ‘Alterural’ said that the main goals of the project are the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina's villages by recognizing their cultural and natural heritage, and promoting BiH villages in order to strengthen awareness of the importance of natural heritage and unique cultural and material heritage.

She underlined that one of the goals is to reduce the departure of young people from rural areas and to promote the socioeconomic development of rural areas.

Municipalities and cities from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina can nominate their villages.

“Some of the main characteristics are that the villages have a rich heritage, that they have certain monuments and that there are nature reserves or waterfalls in the surroundings,” said Imanić.

Head of the City of Mostar's Economic Service, Ivana Marić, said that the City of Mostar will support this project by collecting certain applications and starting the tender procedure so that one or more places from the Mostar area will be nominated.
