RS Council of Peoples rejects Bosniak caucus’ veto on Victims of War Torture Act

FENA Dušica Stanojević

BANJA LUKA, July 24 (FENA) - At today's session, the Council of Peoples of Republika Srpska (RS) rejected the veto submitted by the Bosniak caucus against the Law on the Protection of Victims of War Torture, which they consider to be discriminatory against the Bosniak people.

Therefore, the law will have to be harmonized at the Joint Commission of the Council and the National Assembly of RS.

If the amendments proposed by the Bosniak caucus, which ask for equaling of the rights of all victims throughout the entire BiH, get rejected by the Joint Commission, then the Constitutional Court of RS will give the final word on the law.

On June 29, deputies in the Bosniak caucus filed a motion to protect the national interest, pointing out that the victims who reside in the Federation of BiH are unable to obtain the status defined by the law, and the law does not recognize the documentation with evidence of torture from victims’ associations from the other entity, the FBiH.

The Bosniak caucus has proposed amendments to point out the deficiencies of the law which the RS National Assembly adopted on June 21.
