SOFIA/SARAJEVO, May 17 (FENA) - The European Union - Western Balkans Summit opened this morning in the capital of Bulgaria.
The summit, since Thessaloniki in 2003, brings together heads of states and governments of 28 member states of the European Union and six Western Balkan states.
Bosnia and Herzegovina's delegation is led by Bakir Izetbegović, Chairman of the Presidency of BiH.
European leaders arrived this morning at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, where the summit is taking place, to reiterate their strong support for continued integration of the Western Balkans.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that “for the sake of peace and security, Europe needs a stable Western Balkans with good economic development".
European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn reminded that the EU has adopted a new Enlargement Strategy that confirms the European perspective for this region.
“This means every country must do its job. Let us make the most of this momentum to make a decisive progress on the European path,” said Hahn.
Austrian Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz said that his country supports the progress of all the countries of the region and that it will continue to do so during the Austrian presidency of the European Union.
Swedish Prime Minister Stephan Lofven said that there will also be talks on security and migration.
