Bishop Grigorije signs Platform for Peace

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 8 (FENA) – Bishop of Eparchy of Zahumlje, Herzegovina and the Littoral, Grigorije Durić ,signed in Trebinje the Platform for Peace on behalf of the Interreligious Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. on behalf of all religious communities and churches in BiH, as well as his eparchy, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) said.

The signing ceremony was announced during the official opening of the fifth symposium “Theology in the Public Sphere” organized by the Center for Philosophy and Theology of Trebinje.

The Platform for Peace is a document created in the form of a declaration and developed as a result of the intensive work of the PRO-Future Peace Project.

In his presentation, entitled “Between Passive Proclamation and Active Action,” Bishop Grigorije brought to the audience the reasons why he, together with other members of the Interreligious Council of BiH, has decided to support the Platform for Peace.

“Those who speak of peace often do not believe themselves in what they are propagating or what they are advocating. In order to come to true peace, peace cannot and should not be just a word on our lips. Just as peace cannot be false, the struggle for peace cannot and must not be false either, but should be derived from true belief and good intent. Those who choose to fight for peace should know that they will be attacked and ridiculed in this fight and on this path they chose, but true peace is the only option for this region. If we do not work on understanding and reconciliation, there will be no life for those who have gone somewhere to return here, as well as to us who have stayed here because nothing will be done if we are afraid of new conflicts and massacres,” Mr. Grigorije said.

He urged all representatives of religious communities and institutions to support the Platform for Peace document.

The Mufti of Mostar, Salem ef. Dedović, in a statement to journalists, stressed that it was important that the messages of peace and warmth are sent out today from Trebinje.

“It is important that religious communities together support one such project. Our cooperation is open and what is most important is that this cooperation has a direct effect on the lives of our congregations and if our cooperation results in reconciliation, then it is a great achievement,” said ef. Dedović. He stressed that there were enough space and resources in BiH for the coexistence of everyone and an atmosphere of sincere dialogue that can lead to reconciliation.

The Platform for Peace was adopted in June 2017 by the BiH Council of Ministers. Shortly afterward, this document was introduced to the members of the Joint Committee on Human Rights of both Houses of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly, which was the first step towards the adoption of this document in both Houses.

The platform was also supported by all three members of the BiH Presidency, lawmakers from all major parties in the Parliamentary Assembly, BiH Minister for Human Rights and Refugees, more than 60 mayors of local communities in BiH and others.

PRO-Future is the project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which is implemented in more than 60 municipalities in BiH by the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in cooperation with the Institute for Youth Development CULT, Caritas BiH, Tuzla Citizens Forum, Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Banja Luka, Nansen Dialogue Center Mostar and the Interreligious Council of BiH.
