SARAJEVO, February 7 (FENA) - BiH Presidency Member Mladen Ivanić assessed that the adoption of the EU Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans was an extremely important event.
Mr. Ivanić told FENA that he had previously argued that the latest things happening in the European Union show that, perhaps for the first time in a long while, the European Union is serious about its enlargement to the Western Balkans.
“I think the adoption of this Strategy is crucial and that after this, it will never again really be a question of whether or not the countries of the Western Balkans will become members of the EU. They definitely will, the question is only when,” says Mr. Ivanić.
In his words, it is apparent from all that was said that they consider Serbia and Montenegro as countries that have gone much further than any other, and that Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the countries that are yet to emerge and begin with serious reforms.
“When, how and in which way we will become a member of the European Union depends primarily on us. Some things can and must be done faster. I hope that we will eventually deliver to the European Union the responses to the Questionnaire because that would be extremely significant, so at least we could enter the procedure for obtaining the candidate status,” said Mr. Ivanić.
He added that he hoped in the time that is coming, there would be fewer internal conflicts, less formal acceptance of the accession to the European Union and more genuine work, and that “we will do whatever we can, and we can do a lot, to not abuse our internal affairs and to not use them to slow down the process of accession to the European Union”.
