SARAJEVO, January 30 (FENA) - The FBiH Prime Minister Fadil Novalić and prime ministers of the Sarajevo and Tuzla Cantons, Elmedin Konaković and Bego Gutić, commenting yesterday’s announced construction of both motorway and expressway routes linking Sarajevo and Belgrade, stressed the importance of connecting the two cities and countries, expecting it to bring positive economic effects.

“The main goal is to connect Belgrade and Sarajevo, thus also better connecting Serbia and BiH in order to better understand each other and to communicate more,” said Novalić.

He reminded that in the last six months there was heated debate over the potential route to connect these two cities. If we look at it from economic perspective, it is only logical that it should go via Tuzla, Novalić stated.

“A compromise solution has been offered - to build the motorway in two directions, except the Tuzla direction should be covered with expressway rather than a motorway, and the same type of road will be built through eastern Bosnia,” Novalić said, noting that this should not be confused with the road to Goražde that goes down the Prača valley.

Earlier, at the trilateral meeting held between the President of Turkey Rexhep Tayyip Erdoan, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and a member of the BiH Presidency Bakir Izetbegović, yesterday in Istanbul, a proposal was made to build both motorway routes between Sarajevo and Belgrade.

“Yesterday in Istanbul, they reached a compromise solution and what is important to us in Tuzla is the starting point for the construction of the Sarajevo-Belgrade motorway, whether it will be from Sarajevo towards Zenica and Tuzla, or it will go from Sarajevo towards East Bosnia continuing further on to Serbia,” said Gutić.

“All the studies have shown that the Tuzla Canton is the most populated canton, that is, the most populated region together with Bijeljina and Brčko, and that this is a part of BiH with the most economic potential and it is therefore logical for the Sarajevo - Belgrade motorway to go through this region,” said Gutić.

According to Konaković, road connection between Sarajevo and Belgrade also carries a wider political significance and symbolizes a message of peace and stability in the Balkans.
