BiH joining Eurotransplant a condition for increasing number of transplantations

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 5 (FENA) - After the FBiH Parliament adopted amendments to the Law on Organ Transplantation, the Independent Bloc in the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH held a public discussion on importance of signing of an organ donor card.

It was emphasized that the adopted law needs to be a precondition for increasing the number of transplantations because the reform of health insurance system is necessary.

Independent Bloc emphasized that BiH does not have a Law on Transplantation on the state level, there are entity laws, and there is no ministry of health on state level, as an umbrella body.

Donor card was signed by president of the Independent Bloc and deputy in the House of Representatives of BiH PA Senad Šepić, who emphasized at the discussion that becoming part of the Eurotransplant network is one of the key conditions for increasing number of transplants, calling others to sign a donor card and that way help those who need such assistance.

There are currently around 3000 hemodialysis patients in BiH, of whom at least one third could have organ transplantation, but there is an average of 20 transplants done per year, mostly from living donors.
