ITA BiH – Higher excise tax on cigarettes as of January 1, 2018

BANJA LUKA, January 2 (FENA) - As of January 1, 2018, the Indirect Taxation Authority of BiH has introduced increased prices of cigarettes, which is a result of harmonization of the excise tax policy in BiH with the excise tax policy on tobacco in the European Union.

The decision to establish special and minimum excise tax on cigarettes and the amount of excise tax on smoking tobacco for 2018 which defines that, as from 1 January2018, cigarettes would fall under a proportional excise tax at the rate of 42 percent of the retail cigarette price and a specific excise in the amount of 75 KM for 1,000 pieces, or 1,50 KM for the package of 20 pieces.

“If the total excise tax on cigarettes (proportional + special), calculated at the above rates, is lower than the minimum excise, then a minimum excise tax of 2.60 KM is added per pack of cigarettes,” explained the ITA BiH.
