SARAJEVO, February 8 (FENA) – Representatives of competent institutions for the fight against corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered today at the annual conference in the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occasion of the International Day of the Fight against Corruption. They concluded that in Bosnia and Herzegovina the process of fighting corruption should be accelerated by coordination with competent institutions at all levels of government.

The conference participants were welcomed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Zvizdić, who stated that the fight against corruption is an extremely important topic for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which, according to the corruption perception index published annually by Transparency International BiH, ranks 110 out of 180 countries in the world.

- This is devastating information and it is time to start changing that perception. Because corruption, given that it is difficult to prove in judicial proceedings, is often measured by the general social impression, i.e. perception. Such a perception can be changed, but not only with words, but with actions. We need to support the judiciary, civil society organizations and relevant anti-corruption offices to not be afraid to investigate and prosecute all people suspected of having committed certain corrupt acts, regardless of who those people are. No one should be above the law, and no one should be protected from scrutiny - said Zvizdić.

He added that meritocracy as a principle and principle of staffing at all levels of government means that the most educated and qualified people are in the most responsible positions.

He also stated that "as a state, we implement all the obligations we have assumed by signing and ratifying the United Nations Convention against Corruption, that we have a high-quality Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of the Fight Against Corruption (APIK), and that we have good laws on preventing conflicts of interest and that we have strong cantonal and entity offices to fight corruption".

The director of APIK, Elvis Kondžić, said that the agency will advocate for coordinated action in the prevention of corruption, which is what it is responsible for.
