SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - Members of the wartime Presidency and the Assembly of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as active politicians, remembered today in Sarajevo of the most important events of gaining independence at a roundtable titled "Three decades of independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina".

The then President of the Assembly of the Republic of BiH, Miro Lazović, emphasized that the disintegration of Yugoslavia began at the 14th Congress of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia in 1990 and that the ideology behind it was the aspiration to create nation-states.

He added that at the time, Slobodan Milošević offered to keep BiH in a "shortened Yugoslavia" in which Alija Izetbegović would be the first president.

"Izetbegović then said that BiH would remain only in Yugoslavia if both Croatia and Serbia remain in it, but that was not acceptable for Milošević and Tuđman, who had already agreed on the division of BiH in Karađorđevo," said Lazović.

A member of the wartime Presidency of the Republic of BiH, Ejup Ganić, said that the leadership of RBiH made all efforts to preserve Yugoslavia, but that there was not "enough love" from either side.

He also reminded of the attempt that was made in cooperation with the leadership of Macedonia, but that it did not succeed either.

The BiH Presidency member Šefik Džaferović pointed out that a little over 30 years ago, at a time when black clouds were hovering over Bosnia and Herzegovina, they chose the path to freedom.

"Our ideals, then and today, were the same. We were forced to fight for freedom, independence, but also for democracy, and we made huge sacrifices. In addition to honorable defense against brutal aggression, international law is also the foundation of our statehood," said Džaferović.

He emphasized that the current crisis in BiH is a serious one, but that it is very important to know that this crisis is not a conflict between ethnic groups.

In addition to the roundtable, the Archives of the Federation of BiH also organized the exhibition "Three Decades of Independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina", which contains 191 newspaper articles from Oslobođenje, Borba, Službeni list, Politika and Nova Bosna.
