SARAJEVO, January 21 (FENA) - Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Samantha Power ended her visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina tonight, and at a press conference at the National Museum said that the United States will continue to support independent anti-corruption offices to eradicate rampant corruption throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“We will invest in a freer environment for the media that will tell the truth and reveal bad deeds. We will invest in the diversification of the economy in BiH and in clean energy. We will work to make BiH the next tourist destination in Europe, a place where you can ski, hike, go rafting, eat ćevapčići whether they are from Banja Luka or Sarajevo,” said Power.

She expressed the opinion that the citizens of BiH want and deserve a democratic state without corruption, without ethnic tensions.

Young leaders, civil servants she spoke to yesterday told her how much they love their country, BiH, but openly expressed concern for its future.

“Leaders in BiH are trying to sow divisions and are not focused enough on the challenges that affect the lives of ordinary citizens, who simply want to live in freedom, dignity and security. Milorad Dodik has especially created a climate of tension, a climate that is vulnerable and that can lead to the risk of escalation. I had an honest meeting today in the Presidency of BiH where I emphasized the importance of peace and the danger of secessionist rhetoric,” said Power.

She says that she conveyed to the members of the Presidency of BiH what every young person told her, and that is that young people are tired of politics and that it is harder and harder for them to see the future for themselves in a country facing so much corruption and division.

She believes that mentioning the war makes the situation very difficult to attract investment from the international community and that it will be difficult in such a situation to build a strong, sustainable economy that will create new jobs for young people.

“Finally, I conveyed to the members of the Presidency the message that I was asked to convey from US President Joe Biden, and that is that we, the US, stand with all the people in BiH and want to work with them to unleash the potential of this country. In the past 26 years, the United States has been with the citizens of BiH and we still stand by you,” said Power.

She stated that the sanctions for corruption will continue, and that they will be in the future as well.

She underlined that USAID takes the sanctions imposed on Milorad Dodik extremely seriously.
