SARAJEVO, January 21 (FENA) - During her stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, USAID Administrator Samantha Power reaffirmed the United States' strong commitment to building a democratic, inclusive and prosperous future for BiH citizens.

She began her visit to BiH with a meeting with investigative journalists from several local media outlets in Oslobođenje, the country's oldest print media, to discuss the key role of independent media and investigative journalism in detecting corruption in BiH and informing citizens of growing polarization and misinformation.

She stressed that support for independent media is a fundamental pillar of the United States' efforts to strengthen democracy and fight endemic corruption in BiH, the USAID said.

The administrator met with a group of survivors of war camps of various ethnic backgrounds who faced horrific persecution for their ethnic identity, and today they are part of an ethnically diverse group of camp survivors who have come together to promote understanding, reconciliation, and trust throughout BiH.

The surviving camp inmates described their daily efforts to counter the dangerous rhetoric of divisions, sharing their own camp experiences with younger generations to underscore why the war must never happen again in BiH.

Since 2010, USAID has been working with members of numerous war victims' associations to share their stories with other BiH citizens, especially young people, to show them the real consequences of the conflict. Through their engagement, they are initiating discussions on how BiH can move forward through peacebuilding and reconciliation.

Power continued her first day of the visit in East Sarajevo, Republika Srpska, where she met with young women, environmental activists in the fight against corruption in their community.

The Administrator congratulated them on their courage in opposing and detecting corruption, emphasizing that the fight against corruption is the key engagement of USAID and the US Government in BiH and that this fight is the foundation for strengthening the rule of law and democratic institutions of BiH.

She then visited the U.S. Embassy and met with local employees who have supported the USAID mission for more than 25 years. Most local employees have been working with the USAID Mission in BiH since its inception after the war, and the administrator thanked them for their commitment to building BiH's future.

Administrator Power concluded the first day of the visit with a meeting with a group of young political leaders who demonstrated their commitment to addressing the most important issues of concern to BiH citizens, and Power stressed that BiH's future depends on young people to take the lead in all sectors.
