ZAGREB, January 16 (FENA) - Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković met with Speaker of the House of Peoples of BiH Dragan Čović and discussed relations between Croatia and BiH, preparations for a joint session of the Croatian Government and the Council of Ministers of BiH, amendments to the BiH Election Law and protection of equality of all three constituent peoples, especially Croats, the Government of the Republic of Croatia announced.

Speaking about the changes to the Election Law in the light of the continuation of the negotiation process, Čović said that urgent stabilization of BiH is needed through changes to the Election Law, and also referred to the Mostar Agreement. He reiterated that the equality of the constituent people is the foundation of the functioning of BiH, and that legitimate representation should be achieved in both Houses of Peoples and the Presidency of BiH. He said that the only serious approach of the signatories of the Mostar Agreement is to work on its full implementation, as an important step for political integrity and progress.

"In that process, the rights of the constituent peoples cannot be further violated. We must eliminate discrimination and inequality and ensure the equality of all three peoples," Čović said.

Prime Minister Plenković pointed out that the synergy and cohesion of all three constituent peoples and others is key for BiH to be functional and able to move forward. He said that the Croatian Government was sending a message of respect for BiH and its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as our friendly and neighboring state, with which we want to resolve open issues and strengthen economic cooperation.

"Croatia's position is clear, and that is support for reaching an agreement on changes to the BiH Election Law as soon as possible to achieve equality and legitimate representation of all three constituent peoples in the highest institutions of BiH. The practice that has been in place in the election of a member of the BiH Presidency since 2006 puts Croats as the smallest constituent people in an unjust position,” said Plenković, adding that the Croatian Government will continue to communicate priority on BiH with all international partners.
