SARAJEVO, December 21 (FENA) – FBiH Assistant Minister of Health Goran Čerkez said today that BiH is currently analyzing the increase in mortality in the last five years compared to pre-pandemic deaths, and that the results show that BiH is in the European average, that mortality increased by 30 percent compared to the period before the pandemic.

"We expect the World Health Organization to present this death report in the next few days," Čerkez said.

Speaking about the current epidemiological situation in the Federation of BiH, he says that there has been a continuum of decline and stabilization this week and last week.

“Currently, the incidence is around 101 and we have 2,227 newly infected people on a weekly basis, which is a significant decrease compared to three or four weeks ago. Also, the admission in hospitals is significantly lower, and there are less than 450 people in hospitals, 25 on ventilators, but mortality is still high,” said Čerkez.

He underlined that we are entering the coming holidays with a more stable situation, but also with increased risks.

“We are aware of the risks posed by the upcoming holidays, especially when we talk about the new coronavirus variant omicron, which has not yet been detected in BiH, but it does not mean that it does not exist. We already know that it exists in neighboring countries. We are sure that a large number of people from the European Union - our citizens, as well as guests, will come to ski resorts in BiH. All this with New Year's celebrations represents a certain risk. We hope that we will get through that next period as well. We will monitor the situation and in accordance with that we will take the necessary measures,” Čerkez pointed out.

He reminded that at this moment, all cantons are left with the possibility to adopt additional measures on the vaccinated-recovered-tested rule.
