Izetbegović: Other parties besides SDA and HDZ must get involved in the process

SARAJEVO, December 2 (FENA) - After today's round of talks at the headquarters of the European Union Delegation in Sarajevo on constitutional and electoral reforms, where US Special Envoy for Electoral Reform Matthew Palmer and Director of the European External Action Service Angelina Eichorst are holding talks with domestic political actors, deputy chairman of the House of Peoples and the SDA president Bakir Izetbegović, said he believed a strategic mistake had been made in the beginning, as there were insufficient talks with the opposition and other political parties in BiH.

"They persisted with the talks with the HDZ and the SDA, and not enough with the opposition and other parties. Everyone should have been involved, this gives the impression that something is being done behind closed doors. And the opposition is justifiably angry with the whole thing as they are now justifiably in a position to say that something is being agreed behind closed doors in a narrow format. Nothing has been agreed so far and will have to continue in an expanded format. All parliamentary parties and their representatives will have to be involved in further talks," Izetbegović underlined.

He said that he was surprised by this approach of the international community from the beginning.

"I kept telling them that this could only provoke speculation, various interpretations, disable or greatly reduce the chances of reaching an agreement. I think they made a strategic mistake and of course, we can correct it," said Izetbegović.

Izetbegović added that not everyone was in the mood to tackle the issues in the FBiH at the moment and that it was finally placed on the table today.

He also added that the participants of the meeting insisted on resolving the issue of electing a member of the Presidency in such a way that Croats in BiH have a crucial role in relation to one of the three. To find a way for the Croat majority to elect one member, to find a model.

"However, at the same time, international envoys insist on deleting ethnic prefixes, which Čović refuses. That even constituencies cannot have any ethnic determinant. I must say that they were not in the mood for the Federation of BiH to be discussed at this time. The fact that it started to be resolved today is the result of my pressure to do it in parallel and for things to stand on two legs," Izetbegović underlined.

He reminded that what was articulated through the Venice Commission is that those prefixes that refer to ethnic determinants must be deleted and that the blockades in the FBiH must stop.

Izetbegović believes that some progress has been made in these past four days. However, he underlined once again that other political parties must be more significantly involved.

He said that Komšić was a legitimately elected member of the Presidency of BiH.

"What does it mean to be legitimate or illegitimate? The one who is elected in accordance with the law; isn't that right? It is a completely vague formulation without any principle. I asked the people from the Venice Commission, was there anyone who was elected without being legitimate. I did not get any answer," said Izetbegović.
