White: The future of work is changing rapidly already

SARAJEVO, November 29 (FENA) - Senior lecturer in environmental science and education at Deakin University in Australia and one of the speakers at the Sarajevo Unlimited conference, Peta White, told FENA that the literature indicates that the future of work is changing rapidly already.

She explained that the 100 Jobs of the Future research is attempting to achieve is some optimism through insight with a focus on skill development in preparation for flexible future careers.

"The research shows that jobs are shifting from manual to more skilled jobs because of automation. The future will involve people working with machines. It is important to alert people to the skills needed to take part productively in this transition," said White.

White added that education already focuses on developing skills for the 21st century – this includes digital skills, STEM skills, creativity and critical thinking, flexible problem solving, and working with other people.

"Many of the new jobs involve interdisciplinary knowledge and skills and a capacity for lifelong learning. The education system needs to increase its focus on these advanced skills (as opposed to training for careers or specific knowledge)," she explained.

Knowledge of a discipline is still important – however, it is likely that this knowledge will be used in collaboration with others – in interdisciplinary teams.

One of our experts said “learn how to code but learn how to paint“ demonstrating the importance of having diverse skills and bits of knowledge.

"Disciplinary knowledge needs to be used creatively with an increased focus on problem-solving. Students need to be agentic (thinking and acting for themselves) rather than being passive receivers of knowledge," said White.

She invited the audience to explore the 100 jobs of the future… looking for opportunities for the implications for skill development and education.

"We hope that our presentation will open up fresh thinking about the future of jobs and work," concluded White.
