Ivanić: We're in a situation in which big global powers are clashing over BiH

BAKU, November 4 (FENA) - Bosnia and Herzegovina has obviously found itself in a situation, thanks to local politicians, "where the big and influential powers clash and use BiH as a proxy", said a former member of the Presidency of BiH and former BiH foreign minister Mladen Ivanić in a conversation with journalists in Baku today, where he is present as one of the participants of the 8th Global Baku Forum, FENA reports from the capital of Azerbaijan.

Commenting on the adoption of the Resolution in the United Nations Security Council which extended the mandate of the European Union Forces (EUFOR), although the possibility of a Russian veto was mentioned earlier, Ivanić said that "obviously Mr. Dodik agrees that EUFOR should stay in BiH, even though he claimed that EUFOR's mandate would not be extended. later on he realized that it would be wiser for EUFOR's mandate to be extended, and obviously, Russia was also interested for EUFOR to stay in BiH.

In his opinion, this UN vote on the Resolution has shown that the power play between big global players around BiH still continues.

"They play tricks on each other there and I would say that what we have had the opportunity to see so far was only the first part of that game. There are probably agreements we don't know about, which will be visible in 15, 20 days or a month. It’s hard to say what they are, but they certainly exist. I doubt that the Resolution would be voted unanimously and that some country would not veto it if the deal does not suit everyone," said Ivanić.

Some analysts have interpreted the resolution as a defeat for the West because they agreed to remove the High Representative from the text so that Russia would not veto it.

Ivanić says that it is very difficult for him to say what the motive of Western countries is, but that he would not look at things from one perspective alone.

He further points out that this conflict of influential countries has been going on since the beginning of the process of appointing the High Representative.

Ivanić thinks that the entire period of Christian Schmidt's mandate, whatever it may be, will be marked by this clash, which, especially in the beginning, limits his room for maneuver. But as time goes on, we will see which of these two conceptions of the OHR will become dominant.

In the end, he says he is not happy that the "big, global powers are clashing over BiH".

"It is never good, but we obviously got into that situation thanks to local politicians. And when the big ones are fighting over a small country, that will certainly not end well for that small country," concluded Ivanić.
