Opposition leaders write to EBU because of discriminatory behavior of RTRS

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, October 19 (FENA) - Discriminatory behavior of the Radio and Television of the RS (RTRS) represents an unprecedented attack on media freedom, as the goal is to stifle any opposition voice in the entity of Republika Srpska that is not in line with the ruling party's policies that they disseminate via RTRS and a number of commercial media that are allowed to connect to MUH-A digital signal span, it is stated in the letter that the presidents of the opposition parties Mirko Šarović (SDS), Branislav Borenović (PDP), Nenad Nešić (DNS) and Goran Selak (SPS) sent to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an organization that brings together all European public service broadcasters.

"We would like to inform you about the fact that the RTRS, as one of the public broadcasting services in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has not allowed certain commercial TV outlets to broadcast their digital signals and connect to digital MUH-A for several months now, although it has undertaken the obligation to provide all commercial TV stations with program broadcasting after the analog signal transmitter is switched off," it is stated in the letter of the opposition leaders.

The letter reminds of the decision of the Communications Regulatory Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which says that public radio and television services are obliged to enable digital terrestrial broadcasting of television programs of other RTV stations according to technical and program conditions and the decision of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, which obliges RTRS, BHT, and the Communications Regulatory Agency to include commercial TV stations, that these days turn off their analog TV signal, within 30 days at the locations of Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Mostar.

"The BHT, as a public broadcasting service of Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowed the signal to commercial televisions in the coverage zones that they had before the analog signal was switched off in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, what BHT did with other important commercial TV stations in the Federation of BiH, the Radio-Television of the RS has been refusing to do in the entity for months, violating the conclusion of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly and making its selection based on the criteria whether the TV stations are pro-government or not," reads the letter to the European Broadcasting Union.
