Invisibility in migration laws negatively affects the equality of women

SARAJEVO, October 13 (FENA) - A significant number of prescribed migration policies and strategies do not attach enough importance to gender issues. Gender aspects of migration are generally neglected or underestimated, leading to negative consequences to the detriment of vulnerable and neglected categories in the migration process.

This was emphasized at a three-day conference on gender equality and migration organized by Hilfswerk International and the Association for Assistance and Development "Hajde", in cooperation with the BiH Agency for Gender Equality, the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the MARRI Regional Center.

The conference on gender representation in the field of migration gathered representatives of institutional and security structures, embassies, international organizations, and civil society organizations from North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Director of the Agency for Gender Equality of BiH, Samra Filipović-Hadžiabdić, said that the non-recognition and invisibility of migrant women and the non-definition of women in migration laws negatively affect their social rights.

“Groups of women who are forced to travel alone or with children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, adolescents, unaccompanied boys and girls and people with disabilities are often at special risk of coercion, exploitation, human trafficking and other types of violence,” she warned.

The three-day conference is part of the project "Reducing Irregular Migration in the EU by Strengthening the Capacity of Migration-Related Structures in the Western Balkans", co-financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) and the Austrian Ministry of Interior (BMI) dedicated to the networking processes of the Western Balkan countries in terms of rules, regulations, and procedures for the treatment of migrants, to reduce illegal migration to EU countries.
