SARAJEVO, October 7 (FENA) - Venezuelan diplomat and former president of the United Nations (UN) Security Council in 1992, Diego Arria, who will receive the recognition as the Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo tonight, said that during that period the international community "miserably failed" before the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that the world did not understand that the war was not just a military conflict, but a moral challenge in human consciousness.
Ambassador Arria is the first senior official of the international community to say during a visit to Srebrenica that a "slow genocide" is taking place there.
He claims that he did not defend either Muslims or Bosniaks at the trial, but only what he saw with his own eyes.
“Then I stated that it is not enough for that court that Milošević is a criminal and that he allowed people to die like dogs, but that they need more evidence. Only later did they accept that as the truth. Milošević was an entertainer to the international community and managed to manipulate them,” he said.
At the press conference, Ambassador Arria spoke about "covering the facts" about the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period of aggression by senior UN officials. Ambassador Arria wrote a book about this topic, which he says he was writing for 30 years.
He added that he dedicated the book to the citizens of BiH. He claims its main value is that it is a narrative of what was really going on behind closed doors in the UN Security Council.
He expressed great gratitude for receiving the recognition and said that he has been to BiH four times, but that he is leaving it as a better man.
