Jakić: Western Balkan countries can be leaders in hydrogen production

MOSTAR, October 5 (FENA) - "Hydrogen as the energy source of the future in BiH" is the topic of a conference held on Tuesday at the Intera Technology Park in Mostar to showcase innovation opportunities in the sustainable use of renewable energy sources.

President of the Croatian Association for the Development and Application of Hydrogen Fuel Cells Ivica Jakić said that they are here today to continue the aspirations and tasks presented by the European Commission in its project Green Platform for decarbonization of industry, decarbonization of transport by introducing hydrogen as a universal energy source.

"In this way, we want to expand our activities beyond the EU, where we are actively involved in such projects, and in the countries of the Western Balkans, which we believe can be leaders in hydrogen production and hydrogen consumption as an energy source in this area.

He stressed that hydrogen is the only fuel element that contributes to decarbonization and its benefits are truly great.

"Hydrogen is an energy source that can be stored either in tanks, underground or in certain other ways and used when you need it. It is the only fuel element that contributes to decarbonization because its combustion only produces electricity and clean water.

The advantages of hydrogen are great in that we can put electricity from solar power plants, winds that give us electricity, even when we don't need it, and we use it with that hydrogen when we need it," Jakić explained.

Vice President of the Foreign Trade Chamber of BiH Vjekoslav Vuković emphasized that according to European Union standards, decarbonization should be completed by 2050, and liquid hydrogen should be introduced as an alternative fuel much earlier.

Thanks to the hardworking people in BiH, says Vuković, these projects have already started, as well as the preparations for the production of liquid hydrogen from renewable energy sources.

"BiH lies on green energy, we are full of energy from wind, water, solar energy, but of course also the waste from which biomass is produced and then gas that makes liquid hydrogen. It is the production of liquid hydrogen, i.e. its use in transport that would lead to significant savings and we must not forget the ecology and our awareness in this context and reduction of CO2 emissions in BiH," said Vuković.

He assessed that administrative adjustments in BiH are taking place very slowly and that the academic community and businesses are much faster in innovations and applications of these innovative technologies than the state itself.

"We must speed up these processes and adjustments and put pressure on the BiH institutions to start applying these rules and adopt regulations that reduce decarbonization and address the issue of renewable energy sources as primary energy sources in BiH," said Vuković.

The event was organized by the Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with the Western Balkans Hydrogen Platform, the Croatian Association for the Development and Application of Hydrogen Fuel Cells and the companies HEET Prozor/Rama and ALFATERM Mostar.
