SARAJEVO, October 3 (FENA) - The Mine Detection Dog Training Center in BiH is implementing projects related to mine action, and one of them is assistance to mine victims.

Head of the mine victim assistance project at this center, Marija Trlin, told FENA that they started with these projects at the end of 2014, when, thanks to partners in America, the Marshall Legacy Institute, they started implementing the 'Children against mines' project (CHAMPS).

“The very name 'Children against mines' indicates that we have included children in BiH in this project. The main goal of this project, which is funded by the US, is that children in BiH from six different schools and different parts of BiH, have started to communicate with American children. They are learning to be citizens of the world, they are learning how to expand their horizons and how to help, to reach mine victims who need help,” said Trlin.

According to her, the demining process is going well and they are extremely satisfied with the way, especially in the last few years, how the mine problem is being solved, "but the victims of mines in this country will always be people who need help".

“Thanks to the regulated system in our country, mine victims are included in the assistance projects provided by the state, but we have determined that this assistance is not adequate. That is why we started with projects to help mine victims, we upgraded the existing aid to something much bigger and what is adapted to their needs,” Trlin explained.

She said that such a model was applied in the CHAMPS project, and the target group is all men and women in need, whose prostheses are worn out.

“The children were especially engaged here, because in their communities they recognized people who needed help and created a special friendly relationship with them, which turned out to be another kind of help that mine victims needed. We are implementing this project and we are very grateful to the Government of the United States of America for recognizing the needs of mine victims in BiH. We have been here continuously since 2014 and we hope to continue,” said Trlin.

She notes that they help 20 mine victims a year and reach up to 4,000 people with messages about the danger of mines, "which is not a negligible aspect of this project."

Trlin said that in June this year, they started a project to help mine victims in BiH, which is financed by the Government of Germany, for which they are extremely grateful.

“I expect that at the beginning of December we will have all 60 prostheses completed for mine victims. We promised them and we stand by them, that in the next three years they will have service, repair for all the prostheses without any additional costs,” said Trlin at the end of the conversation for FENA.
