SARAJEVO, September 28 (FENA) - Transparency International (TI) presented today in Sarajevo, at a round table on the occasion of the International Day for Universal Access to Information, a research on monitoring the implementation of the Law on Freedom of Information.

In a statement to the media, Chairman of the Management Board of TI, Srdjan Blagovčanin, emphasized the need for BiH to adopt an innovated legal framework for access to information at all levels.

He reminded that more than 20 years have passed since BiH adopted laws regulating access to information, which played a key and important role in the democratization of society, in the fight against corruption.

Speaking about the conducted research, he said that the research findings showed that access to information is at a level slightly above 50 percent, and that this is an unsatisfactory percentage. That percentage is significantly worse when it comes to the judiciary.

Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to BiH Ekaterina Dorodnova pointed out that access to information is a fundamental right of any democratic society and it is related to good governance, public trust, trust in institutions, as well as transparency and accountability of these public institutions.

According to her, institutions must make information available to citizens. Therefore, she believes, we must have established laws that regulate it and those laws must be of very high quality and reach high standards in that area.

Dorodnova says the EU has so far provided support to BiH at the state and entity levels in improving these standards.

She emphasized that unhindered access to information is very important for journalists, especially those who deal with investigative journalism, and "it is very important for exposing cases of corruption".

“The right legislation that is defined in the right way and that is adopted as such is very important for any country that intends to join the EU,” said Dorodnova.
