Izetbegović: Parties from RS believe that they have the right to deny genocide

FENA Press release

BRDO NEAR KRANJ, September 27 (FENA) - Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegović participated in the Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of the Western Balkans, held in Brdo near Kranj in the Republic of Slovenia.

Speaking about the role of parliaments in restoring confidence in the European Union (EU) enlargement process, Izetbegović said that the fact that that trust was undermined was influenced by several factors, such as changes in the enlargement methodology and stricter criteria compared to the previous period, but also postponing accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia.

In that sense, he added, it is an indisputable responsibility of the European Parliament and the national parliaments of the EU member states that directly or indirectly participated in making such decisions.

“Those decisions were selfish and irresponsible. The EU and the countries that make it have given a little, and taken a lot from the countries of the Western Balkans. And they continue to take what is most valuable to us, which cannot be compensated by anything - the most vital part of our societies, young, healthy, educated people. Hundreds of thousands of complete families have left or are leaving for EU countries,” Izetbegović said.

The Speaker of the House of Peoples pointed out the importance of resolving the issue of relations in BiH, and reminded of the current blockade of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly directed by parliamentary parties based in the RS entity due to the adoption of a law banning genocide denial and celebrating war criminals.

“These parties, led by SNSD, believe that they have the right to deny genocide, honor war criminals, insult victims and threaten the secession of previously ethnically cleansed territory of the state, and then, when such retrograde, uncivilized policy is prohibited by law, then they block the state institutions and turn into a hostage situation,” said Izetbegović.

When it comes to the obligations of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH in fulfilling the conditions for obtaining candidate status, Izetbegović stressed the need to amend the Constitution and electoral legislation, and especially to reduce the powers and competencies of the Houses of Peoples, which decide on all issues instead of only those related to the protection of vital national interests.
