Sejdić: Mr. Schmidt, you also have to take us, the "Others" into account

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, September 8 (FENA) - President of the Roma Association in BiH, Dervo Sejdić expects the High Representative in BiH Christian Schmidt to work on the harmonization of the Constitution and the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights and its implementation must "include the inclusion of us members of minorities or the so-called 'Others', because it concerns us as well".

In an open letter, Sejdić informs Schmidt that he is a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina, "but I am not a member of one of the three constituent peoples."

"I belong to the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the constitutional category of "Others", with the right to vote but without the right to be elected to the position of a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina because I am a Romani person.

This institutional discrimination, in its ruling from 2009, the High Judicial Council of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg found to be discriminative andd ordered the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina to harmonize the Constitution and the Election Law with the European Convention on Human Rights, which is a recommendation of the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission and other European institutions for the protection of human rights and freedoms he points out.

As Sejdić emphasizes, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, mostly on the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are about 350,000 - 400,000 citizens of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina who do not belong to the constituent peoples, whom you forget in your statements and comments or eliminate as an important subject in the election processes of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"In your observation of the Election Process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, you did not refer to the Judgment of the European Court of Human Rights with any gesture or comment, which as a High Representative of the European Union should be your duty and obligation, especially if you refer to the 14 priorities set before Bosnia and Herzegovina from the institution you represent.

I expect that you, as a legalist and a representative of the European Union, work especially on harmonization of the Constitution and the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights and its implementation, you must include us, members of national minorities, and all the "Others" that are not the constituent peoples," wrote Dervo Sejdić, in an open letter to the High Representative Christian Schmidt.
