Ji Ping: China opposes politicization of the coronavirus origins probe

FENA

SARAJEVO, August 19 (FENA) - Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Bosnia and Herzegovina Ji Ping said that since the beginning of Covid-19 pandemic, acting according to the vision of the global health community for all, China has shared experiences in responding to the pandemic with the international community, providing countries around the world, including BiH, with assistance in the fight against Covid as much as it could and took the lead in implementing the largest global cooperation in the field of vaccines, thus making an outstanding contribution to global public health security.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced that it has established a new investigation team into the origins of coronavirus and COVID-19 pandemic.

“China has acted scientifically all along, engaging in global cooperation on a science-based search for the origin of the virus. China has twice invited WHO experts to China for research on origin. In March this year, the WHO officially released the Joint WHO-China Study Team report., which presents the most authoritative, professional and scientifically based conclusions on the search for origin and makes detailed recommendations for future work on origin research. Chinese experts have also submitted a Chinese proposal on the second phase of tracking origin at the initiative of the WHO,” Ambassador Ji told FENA.

China’s position on global origin tracking, he adds, is consistent and clear.

“First, tracing origins is a matter for science. Only scientists should and can be left to identify the zoonotic source of the virus and the routes of transmission from animal to human through scientific research. No state has the right to put its own political interests above people's lives, nor should the issue of science be politicized for the purpose of slander and attacks on other countries. Second, the findings and recommendations of the joint WHO-China report are widely recognized by the international community and scientists and must be respected and implemented by all parties, including the WHO. Future work on the global search for origins should and must start from that basis, instead of "inventing hot water". Third, China has supported and will continue to participate in scientific research. What China opposes is the politicization of the search for origin or traceability of coronavirus, which is contrary to the WHO resolution and ignores the joint study report. Fourth, the WHO Secretariat should comply with the WHO resolution, conduct thorough consultations with Member States on a global work plan on search for origin, including a follow-up mechanism, and fully respect Member States' views. It is very important that a country-of-origin discovery plan must be decided in consultation with the country concerned, as this provides a basis for effective cooperation,” said Ambassador Ji.

When it comes to China's official views on the origin of Covid-19, the Ambassador points out that the virus knows no borders and does not differentiate between races. He adds that China, like other countries, is a victim of a pandemic and "we all hope to discover the origin of the virus and stop its transmission as soon as possible." Given the constant spread and return of the virus, the priority remains to strengthen the equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines and to strengthen solidarity and cooperation. As he says, cooperation in the search for origins must be based on science, and politicization must be firmly rejected.

“However, for a long time, the United States and several other countries have been using the discovery of the origin of Covid-19 virus in search of an unfounded theory of "laboratory leaks". The U.S. administration is working to release a fake report by the end of this month with the sole purpose of linking the omission from the Wuhan Institute of Virology lab and to bring out evidence of Chinese obstruction to origin detection. Although there is no progress in the investigation yet, it is clear to everyone that the investigation is not the purpose and just launching an investigation is important, i.e. continuing to spread the pomp about the "origin investigation" can deplete Chinese diplomatic resources,” says the Chinese Ambassador to BiH.

Asked what measures China is currently taking to combat the pandemic and what the results are, Ambassador Ji said that recently, due to the spread of delta strains, the global epidemiological situation has deteriorated sharply and there is growing pressure to prevent imported cases in China. On August 18, 46 new cases of coronavirus infection were recorded, of which 41 cases were imported from abroad.
