Košarac: 'Open Balkans' initiative means a chance for prosperity in the region

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 3 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina Staša Košarac said that the regional initiative "Open Balkans" means a chance for prosperity in the Western Balkans and is a stable basis for attracting investment, higher economic growth and reduction of unemployment in the region.

He stressed that the adoption of this initiative, formerly known as the "Mini Schengen", would allow access to the regional economic zone, in order to facilitate trade in goods and services, as well as the free movement of people and capital between the Western Balkans, which is the basic value of the European Union.

“The fact is that BiH has not yet joined the initiative for regional cooperation due to obstructions of some political structures from the Federation of BiH. This is an inexplicable policy, because of which, unfortunately, entrepenuers and the business community from the Republika Srpska and the Federation of BiH suffer,” said Košarac, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH announced.

He welcomed the readiness of BiH Presidency member Milorad Dodik to discuss the "Open Balkans" initiative at the upcoming meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in Belgrade, which is complementary to existing regional initiatives and contributes to strengthening economic growth, overcoming the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and modernization of the economy in line with EU standards.
