Educational activities on climate change and obligations in this area

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 21 (FENA) - By holding the second module of the Climate Change Academy, which was attended by young activists of political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina, non-governmental organizations and the media, a segment of educational activities of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) within the project financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) was realized.

“It was extremely useful for me, and I believe for other MPs, to get information on where Bosnia and Herzegovina is positioned when it comes to the commitments accepted so far, as well as existing plans for adoption of other strategic documents related to the fight against climate change,” said Jasmin Emrić, an MP in the House of Representatives of the BiH PA and a participant in this module.

The participants of the Academy had the opportunity to gain key knowledge about climate change, its impact on the economy, agriculture, water management, health and other vulnerable sectors, with special emphasis on adapting to climate impacts to which BiH has been particularly exposed in recent decades.

Emphasis was also placed on issues of international obligations within the framework of conventions and agreements that BiH has undertaken in the fight against climate change at the global level.

Head of the UNDP Sector for Energy and Environment Raduška Cupać points out that UNDP through various educational activities seeks to raise awareness of the importance of climate change, and approach decision makers at all levels of government to gain direct knowledge and facts, which is crucial for the implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.

Elected officials, but also young participants of the Academy, agree that the negative consequences caused by the climate crisis require a systematic approach, as well as education of all actors in society and reaching a social consensus on how to reduce its catastrophic effects.

As it was stated, climate change is a problem for everyone and joint work is necessary, the UNDP BiH said.
