Džaferović against asymmetric model for the election of BiH Presidency members

SARAJEVO, July 5 (FENA) - The BiH Presidency member Šefik Džaferović said in Sarajevo today, after a meeting with the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Office for Europe and Eurasia Matthew Palmer and Director for Western Europe, Western Balkans, Turkey and the United Kingdom in the European External Action Service (EEAS) Angelina Eichhorst, that it is very important that there is synchronized action between the US and the EU when it comes to reforms in BiH.

"I had two meetings with our guests. In the context of the electoral reform, I have clearly said that any asymmetric solutions when it comes to the election of members of the Presidency of BiH are unacceptable and I would also say that they are dangerous," said Džaferović.

According to him, the model of the asymmetric election of the BiH Presidency members is dangerous for BiH because it does not introduce all three members of the Presidency into office at the same time, and this option should not even be on the table.

"It is very important that the Interdepartmental Working Group operates and that members of the CEC BiH are included in it for many reasons, primarily because of the integrity of the election process and so that the electoral will of citizens is properly translated into the election results," added Džaferović.

He stated that it is very important for the Venice Commission and all authorities to be involved when it comes to international legal aid, because, as he added, we want to have a solution that is in line with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.

"After that, additional political demands of the HDZ emerged, which would certainly not stand the test of the European Court of Human Rights. We have a problem with the functioning of the House of Peoples of the FBiH Parliament because it has proven to be a serious obstacle to the functioning of the Federation of BiH. One political party has a key with which it can block the process such as the election of the FBiH Government. That is why we are talking about symmetrical solutions when it comes to the House of Peoples of the Federation of BiH and the Council of Peoples of the RS," Džaferović emphasized, adding that one systemic discrimination that exists in relation to the Council of Peoples of the RS needs to be removed.

Džaferović emphasized that no one should politicize the issue of the Election Law and that all political parties must do their best, regardless of whether they are in power or in opposition.

At the second meeting, at which all members of the Presidency of BiH were present with the officials of the United States and the European Union, he added that they focused more on the overall reforms and the European path of BiH.

Answering the questions from the journalists, Džaferović said that the international community should help us reach democratic solutions that the civilized world envisages for the situations like the one in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
