Komšić - Nderitu: UN will not remain silent on the denial of genocide

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 15 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić received today UN Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to United Nations Secretary General Alice Wairimu Nderitu.

Komšić said that the Residual Mechanism, as the successor to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, has an important role in implementing the United Nations' strategic commitments, first of all, the elimination of the practice of impunity for war crimes and genocide, and then for the preservation of the memory of victims of war crimes and crimes of genocide such as the one that took place in Srebrenica.

In that light, he added, the final verdict of the Hague Tribunal against Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić and others before him is important.

UN Undersecretary Nderitu said she chose Bosnia and Herzegovina for her visit precisely because UN monitoring teams have noticed an escalation of hate speech and glorification of war crimes, in which political officials are participating.

She expressed a strong commitment that the United Nations will not remain silent on the denial of genocide because it is a preparation for a new genocide and that it will do everything to make the voice of those people who want to live together without discrimination heard.

The interlocutors agreed that the role of the Residual Mechanism and the UN should be focused on continuous education on the causes and consequences of crimes in order to combat populism and hate speech, the BiH Presidency said.
