Džaferović - Nderitu: Denial of genocide is a big problem

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 14 (FENA) - BiH Presidency member Šefik Džaferović received today UN Under-Secretary General and Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide Alice Wairimu Nderitu.

The officials discussed the final verdict of the Hague Tribunal for Ratko Mladić for genocide in Srebrenica and other crimes committed throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.

BiH Presidency member Džaferović said that the Hague Tribunal had a historical role when it came to establishing the truth and administering justice after the war in BiH, and that the work of the Hague Tribunal, as the first war crimes tribunal after the Nuremberg Tribunal, was an exceptional civilizational achievement.

The interlocutors agreed that the denial of genocide and the glorification of criminals is a big problem, and stressed the importance of facing the truth about the past for restoring trust and strengthening peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.

As one of the key priorities, the interlocutors emphasized the need that domestic courts, following the legacy of the Hague Tribunal, continue to prosecute war crimes cases, so that all perpetrators, from the highest to the local level, are brought to justice.

UN Resident Coordinator in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ingrid MacDonald, also attended the meeting, the BiH Presidency announced.
