HAAG, June 8 (FENA) - Following the issuance of the appeal judgment in the case of Prosecutor vs. Ratko Mladić, Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, stated today that Ratko Mladić is one of the worst war criminals in modern history and that he deliberately used his army to torture, rape, kill and expel innocent civilians for only one reason, and that is that they belong to different religions and ethnic groups.

"Mladić pretended to save them in order to justify his crimes. He ordered and committed genocide and should be convicted by everyone in the former Yugoslavia and around the world. His name should be inscribed on the list of the worst in history. This is not a judgment against the Serb people, who Mladić and his supporters have manipulated for decades. Mladić’s guilt is his, and his alone," he pointed out.

Brammertz stressed that no one should deny the verdict and that the survivors and families of the victims could be satisfied with the verdict.

He believes that the verdict has offered hope that justice is still possible.

Speaking about the fact that Ratko Mladić was not convicted for genocide in six Bosnia and Herzegovina's municipalities - Foča, Vlasenica, Ključ, Sanski Most, Kotor Varoš and Prijedor, said that they constantly claimed that genocide had taken place in those six municipalities, but that they have failed.

"Two of the five judges had a positive opinion on the subject," Brammertz concluded.
