UN and BiH sign Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework

SARAJEVO, May 20 (FENA) - Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina Zoran Tegeltija and UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald signed today a new Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework between the United Nations and Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period from 2021 to 2025.

Representatives of 17 UN agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to the Cooperation Framework and have already signed official documents, a framework that has been supported by all stakeholders in BiH, including representatives of all levels of government, NGOs, business and academia.

This is not the first time that such a document has been signed, because BiH has signed that document twice, and the application of the last one, which was signed until 2019, has been extended for a year due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

He underlined that the consequences of Covid-19, especially for the economy, will be very challenging and that BiH will look for solutions through the Cooperation Framework signed today, adding that the agreement reached on that document is an encouraging fact for its implementation.

“It will provide the basis for our development and instruments for measuring the achievement of set goals. It primarily concerns the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, process of joining the European Union with the Action Plan for the realization of priorities from the Opinion of the European Commission, socio-economic reforms until 2022 and regional cooperation,” Tegeltija explained.

The document contains everything necessary for sustainable development in BiH, but, as he pointed out, as with most documents adopted in BiH, much better work is done on their creation than on their implementation, and there is always more responsibility in BiH than on the other side.

Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Bosnia and Herzegovina becoming a full member of the United Nations, which is an important reminder that BiH, as one of 193 members, was part of the leadership of that global system.

UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald emphasized that the document signed today is the result of long and detailed consultations and that it was written in accordance with the goals that BiH has set when it comes to sustainable development.

This new framework, she added, ensures clear priorities to work on together, including an inclusive, secure and clean economy, growth with the promotion of climate change, the digital economy, the sustainability of small and medium enterprises, strengthening the labor market to connect young people with quality jobs and strengthening investment, innovation and research.

“BiH has huge potential in all these areas and we will work together with the authorities in BiH to achieve our goals, especially when it comes to recovery that is needed in terms of Covid 19. Social cohesion is another area of focus which is strengthening support for constructive dialogue where people and especially the youth can directly engage, build trust and overcome stereotypes,” Macdonald said.

There is also development in line with the 21st century in terms of better education, strengthening the health system as well as preventing gender-based violence, child exploitation and supporting people on the move.
