SARAJEVO, April 16 (FENA) - As part of a three-year project for the fight against air pollution "IMPAQ", which is implemented with the financial support of the Swedish Embassy in BiH, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), a ceremony was held today for the donation of air pollution measuring equipment to the FBiH Hydrometeorological Institute (FBiH HMZ).

The Sector for Air Quality of FBiH HMZ received modern laboratory equipment and two mobile stations for measuring air quality, which are also the first mobile measuring stations that this institute will have at its disposal.

The equipment will contribute to creating a better and more complete overview of air pollution in the Federation of BiH, while an earlier donation of two mobile measuring stations to the RS Hydrometeorological Institute made another step further in completing the overview of air pollution in BiH.

The stations will measure the concentration of suspended particles PM10 and PM2.5, sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which is a standard set of monitored pollutants that have the greatest negative impact on human health.

On this occasion, the local project coordinator for IMPAQ, Suzana Gotovac Atlagić, stated that these are extremely advanced versions of measuring stations for measuring air pollution.

"Unfortunately, our country does not have enough equipment and this is extremely valuable help from the people of Sweden," said Gotovac Atlagić.

She points out that serious work is being done in terms of changing the traffic structure in the cities, emphasizing that work is being done in pedestrian zones, as well as the expansion of bicycle paths.

"These are all symbolic elements, but they will contribute to the reduction of pollution," believes Gotovac Atlagić.

Director of FBiH HMZ Almir Bijedić thanked the Swedish Ambassador to BiH Johanna Strömquist for her help in solving the problem of air quality in BiH.

"Through the IMPAQ project, we have solved the documentation that is necessary for successful air quality monitoring and control of air quality monitoring data," said Bijedić.

On this occasion, the Ambassador of Sweden to BiH, Johanna Strömquist, emphasized that air quality has an impact on the health of the population, but also on the economy of the entire country.

She stated that the IMPAQ project will work on strengthening the capacities of BiH in this area and to help the legislators to harmonize the legislation concerning air protection and to harmonize it with the standards of the European Union as soon as possible.
