Scano and Macdonald: Vaccines are important, but so are protective measures

SARAJEVO, March 25 (FENA) - Head of the WHO office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Fabio Scano, said that the vaccine is an important tool to reduce the number of people infected with coronavirus, but that compliance with prescribed epidemiological measures should always be kept in mind.

He was present today when the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina took over the first quantity of vaccines delivered through the COVAX mechanism.

"We will continue our work regarding the distribution of vaccines, but what is very important during a pandemic is that we must fight the coronavirus together. If all of us are not safe, then no one is. It is important that vaccines are now in BiH and we can start protecting medical workers," he said.

He thanked all medical workers in BiH for their commitment when it comes to their care for patients, emphasizing that this is the basic principle of the COVAX mechanism to reach the most vulnerable categories and to overcome all possible problems when it comes to procurement of vaccines.

He stressed that equality is one of the basic pillars when it comes to COVAX and its presence worldwide.

He thanked the Minister of Civil Affairs of BiH, Ankica Gudeljević, for her leadership and coordination on the unprecedented effort to import vaccines through the COVAX mechanism into BiH.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Bosnia and Herzegovina Ingrid Macdonald expressed her condolences to all those who lost their dearest family members and friends in the pandemic.

"BiH joined the COVAX mechanism as one of the countries that paid for participation and deliveries thanks to the vision of the local authorities to adequately protect the most vulnerable categories, from health workers, the population over 65 and everyone else," she said.

Macdonald reminded that in the past 12 months, everyone realized that the pandemic was a global problem, and that the COVAX mechanism was a global solution to that problem.

"Ultimately, COVAX will help billions of people around the world, and today BiH is one of the beneficiaries under this mechanism. Vaccines are currently the most sought-after commodity in the world, but we still need to respect epidemiological measures, because they have been proven to save lives," she stressed.

She also thanked the Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Ankica Gudeljević and her team of associates who worked tirelessly to secure the vaccines, then UNICEF, WHO and others who worked hard to sedure today's delivery of vaccines.
