SARAJEVO, March 17 (FENA) - "Violence is not a private matter" is the slogan under which the advocacy campaign for the adoption of a new law on protection from domestic violence in the Federation of BiH began today, with the aim of harmonizing it with the recommendations of the Istanbul Convention.
The campaign is being implemented by the Foundation for Local Democracy (FLD) with the Safe Network BiH within the regional project "Implementation of norms, changing attitudes", which is implemented by UN Women with civil society organizations in BiH, and is financially supported by the European Union.
"We appeal to the legislators, representatives of the FBiH Parliament to support the adoption of a new law on protection from domestic violence in the Federation of BiH, which ensures the optimal scope of rights for victims of domestic violence and systemic support. Political support in achieving these goals and advocating for change is very much necessary, the Local Democracy Foundation (FLD) said in a statement.
The current law on protection from domestic violence in the FBiH does not facilitate a unified system of support and protection for the victims of domestic violence.
Bosnia and Herzegovina ratified the Istanbul Convention in 2013, which resulted in the obligation to harmonize the relevant legislation in BiH with that convention.
The state has committed itself to ensuring the availability of specialized support services for all victims of violence, which are - safe houses, psychosocial support and treatment, free legal aid and economic empowerment of victims of violence, the FLD said.
"Safe Network BiH", a network of non-governmental organizations dedicated to combating gender-based violence and domestic violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, coordinated by the Foundation for Local Democracy, with the support of an expert working group, drafted a new law to harmonize legislative framework and protection policies with international standards on the elimination of violence against women and other forms of discrimination.
The "Violence is not a private matter" campaign is being implemented by the Foundation for Local Democracy with the Safe Network BiH, within the project "Adoption of legislative changes related to domestic violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the recommendations of the Istanbul Convention".
