SARAJEVO, March 2 (FENA) – A solemn ceremony was held last night at the National Theater in Sarajevo to mark March 1 - Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The "Alija Izetbegović" Foundation organized the event and the patron of the ceremony was a member of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović. The members of the Board of Directors of the Faris Nanić Foundation, academician Mirko Pejanović, and members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić and Šefik Džaferović addressed the audience.

In their speeches, Nanić and Pejanović reminded of important historical facts, of the referendum when in 1992 Bosnia and Herzegovina entered the international scene with all democratic desires, as an independent and sovereign state.

Countries in Europe and the world, as well as the United Nations, have recognized the sovereignty and territorial integrity of BiH.

Nanić reminded of the words of the first President of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Alija Izetbegović who said "Bosnia is more than just a piece of land in the Balkans, for many of us Bosnia is an idea, it is the belief that people of different religions, nations, cultural traditions can live together".

In his address, Academician Pejanović also referred to the history of BiH in the last century, when BiH was part of Yugoslavia and developed its state capacities like other republics.

“BiH was not historically lucky to conduct the results of the referendum in peace, but it was lucky to be defended by the patriotic, multiethnic and politically united Presidency of the Republic of BiH during the aggressive war against the independent state of BiH,” said Pejanović.

In that sense, a member of the Presidency of BiH, Željko Komšić, said that BiH was not given to us 29 years ago by a referendum, but was earned with the greatest possible sacrifices.

Despite all the difficulties that BiH is facing, as he said, we must continue to fight for its integrity and survival. Today, he adds, these attacks are more insidious because BiH is being destroyed strategically, through attacks on its institutions.

BiH Presidency member Šefik Džaferović reminded that BiH, based on the anti-fascist struggle, in the difficult circumstances of the aggression that followed in 1992, fought for its independence and became an internationally recognized state and a full member of the UN.

He pointed out that the burden of responsibility we bear after so many victims, ethnic cleansing and genocide is painful and heavy, but it is even harder for those who do not learn from their past, because leaving the culture of remembrance always preceded the recurrence of crimes.

Independence Day, Džaferović pointed out, is an opportunity to remember those who gave their lives for the defense of BiH, with deep gratitude that today we live in peace and freedom and that we have our own state.

Džaferovic warned of the disastrous influence of retrograde forces in BiH and called for the urgent enactment of a law banning genocide denial.

The ceremony was held in compliance with the strict epidemiological measures adopted against the coronavirus.
