BiH Presidency member Željko Komšić congratulates the Independence Day of BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić extended congratulations to the citizens of BiH on the occasion of March 1, the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Dear citizens of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, both in the homeland and around the world.

We witnessed a great historical event 29 years ago, which will remain inscribed in golden letters in its long history. Bosnia and Herzegovina became an independent state by the freely expressed will of the majority of its citizens.

This act marked the beginning of the process of gaining independence, a process that, by all accounts, is still ongoing. Our state was not given to us but was preserved with the greatest possible renunciation and sacrifice. In addition to all the challenges we face today, with all the current problems, we still have to fight for its integrity and survival.

Those who tried to annul the majority expressed will of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 did not deviate even a millimeter from their goals today. The same forces that attacked and undermined the country because of its independence and autonomy are still active against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

With the same passion with which we fought for independence, freedom, honor and equality after March 1, 1992, we still need to confront the destructive forces that weaken our homeland, but this time through the very institutions of our state.

It is clear to me that some people are tired of waiting for the so-called "better tomorrow", waiting for a democratically responsible state.

We have no choice but to continue the fight for our Bosnia and Herzegovina, relying primarily on ourselves. We don't have another path!

It will soon be three decades since the declaration of independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Extremely simplified, speaking and comparing that period with human life, it would be said that we have entered an active and mature period of life of an independent state.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is an independent country, as are dozens of other countries in Europe and the European Union. We who work through institutions for the benefit of the state and all citizens want, no less and no more, than what the independent states of Europe and the European Union have: a democratic system in which the individual is sacred and in which the equality of individuals is sacred and constitutional.

While all this sounds simple in theory, the road to it is by no means easy. However, I suppose that today we can get a better picture of the circumstances of the decision on independence, which was also not easy.

It is necessary to remember those who lost their lives in the war, which began soon after. Their sacrifice must not be forgotten. Not only must it not be forgotten, but also we must draw certain lessons from that sacrifice.

Our goals can only be achieved if we achieve a political consensus that this country must be a state of equal citizens in every inch of its territory.

In that sense, we have to turn to internal, Bosnian-Herzegovinian dialogue and find that consensus, and not to attempts to understand those who constantly deny the existence of our state.

Let us remain defiant, proud and dignified on the day when we celebrate our greatest holiday.

I wish all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina a happy Independence Day," said Željko Komšić in his congratulatory message.
