WHO donates device for improving the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 to KCUS

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 10 (FENA) - The World Health Organization has donated a next generation sequencing (NGS) device to improve the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 to the Clinical Microbiology of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, as a reference laboratory.

Director of diagnostic disciplines prof. Dr. Sandra Vegar Zubović stated that the employees have been educated and trained to use this device in order to detect new variants of SARS-CoV-2, which gained the capacity for this level of diagnostics.

“Sequences of the complete genome of the virus included in the international database will enable comparison of the genome of our virus isolates with others, molecular-epidemiological monitoring of virus circulation in our area, and import of new variants of SARS-CoV-2,” explained Dr. Vegar Zubović.

According to Head of Clinical Microbiology Dr. Amela Dedeić Ljubović, this methodology is not routine, but will be used primarily for epidemiological and research purposes.

“Targeted testing with close cooperation with epidemiological services is of utmost importance for the detection of new variants of the virus. We also ordered tests for a new variant of the virus, the so-called British strain. We expect their delivery to KCUS soon,” said Dr. Dedeić Ljubović.
