Contactless legal aid services in the time of COVID-19

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 9 (FENA) - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Office for Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the NGO 'Vaša prava BiH' and the IT company Ministry of Programming supported the development of the Legal Aid Application, an online platform launched as a response measure to Covid-19 to provide relevant information in one place to those in need.

The promotion and official launch of the application was held online today, and the event was attended by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Margret Uebber, representatives of the non-governmental sector and other partners.

Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to BiH, Margret Uebber, pointed out the advantages of the Legal Aid Application.

“Uncertain times, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, have caused the most damage to the most vulnerable population. From domestic violence to economic insecurity, violations of labor rights to social benefits, the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina desperately need legal protection. The legal aid application will allow citizens to seek legal information and guidance on their rights, from the security of their own home. It will undoubtedly strengthen legal certainty and confidence in the rule of law in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” she said.

The free legal aid application will serve citizens to identify misinformation, stay informed on a factual basis, especially at a time of widespread unverified information. Users of the application can take advantage of regular updates of laws and regulations adopted at the state, entity and cantonal levels, in response to Covid-19, and in other areas. They can ask direct questions through the app, regarding legal issues they face.

Lawyers working for the NGO 'Vaša prava' will answer citizens' questions and refer them to the nearest legal aid office, in case they need long-term help. Priority will be given to citizens who are entitled to free legal aid, according to the laws applicable in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The Legal Aid Application also provides a map of the Legal Aid Office throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, which should allow users to seek help in their local community as needed. Apart from the mobile application, all services are also available on the website Vaša prava BiH: Vaša prava BiH (pravnapomoc.app). Citizens will also benefit from anonymous answers, which are given to other users and are available on the platform,” stated GIZ.
