Sarajevo Canton govt. and IOM - Migrant issue should be dealt with urgently

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 27 (FENA) - The migrant crisis and primarily the safety of the citizens of th Sarajevo Canton, was the reason for today's meeting between the SC Prime Minister Edin Forto, Minister of Labor, Social Policy, Displaced Persons and Refugees Ivana Prvulović and th Interior Minister Admir Katica with the newly appointed Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Regional Coordinator for Western Balkans, Laura Lungarotti.

At the meeting, the members of the cantonal government clearly emphasized that there will be no new camps in the Sarajevo Canton, because the migrant crisis will no longer be resolved in that way.

"We insisted that this issue be resolved, but on the territory of the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The camps where fewer migrants will stay, which must be located not only in the Sarajevo Canton and the Una-Sana Canton are some of our demands, and they must be equally dispersed on the entire territory of BiH," Katica emphasized.

He added that it has been agreed that there would be no new influx of migrants into the Blažuj camp, where 3,205 of them are currently staying, according to the data from this morning, stressed the minister.

"That number clearly indicates that the camp is at full capacity, and that represents an excellent basis for deviant behaviors," stated Katica.

They asked the Head of the IOM to either reduce the number of migrants in the camp to 1,000 or to close it. Prime Minister Forto also pointed out that the excessive number of migrants staying in the camp in Blažuj is not only a humanitarian but also a security problem.

"Unfortunately, we have a problem, because not all institutions that are responsible for this issue are functioning, so I think that the IOM should use its role and ask higher levels of government to get involved in resolving this issue," Forto pointed out.

He also agreed with Chief Lungarotti that the migrants should not be restricted or banned in their movement, because that could only lead to bigger problems.

Minister Prvulović asked the IOM for financial support for the needs of the Center for Social Work, which works with migrants who are minors.

"It is necessary to strengthen the staff capacities of that center, but also to procure off-road vehicles, IT and office equipment due to the constant increase in the volume of work," said Prvulović.

According to her, the IOM should provide 200,000 KM for that purpose, but this will be more specifically discussed at the next meeting.

Lungarotti announced that she will be a partner to the Sarajevo Canton Government in resolving the issue of migrants, and will hold talks with the mayor of Ilidža, so that he can inform her about the views of the local community.

After that, a meeting will be held with the representatives of the Sarajevo Canton in order to overcome the current situation and finally agree on an urgent response for migration management.
