SARAJEVO, January 26 (FENA) - The Bill on Amendments to the Law on Protection of Victims from Domestic Violence in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was approved by a majority vote at today's online session of the House of Representatives of the FBiH Parliament.
The Government of the Federation of BiH, as the proposer of the Bill, stated that the amendments to the existing law should legitimize the new institute of "persons of confidence" in order to protect victims of violence.
The introduction of this institute would enable the adoption of concrete measures that would strengthen the position of the victim of domestic violence by ensuring that their rights and interests are consistently and adequately represented and taken into account at all stages and through all institutional and non-institutional protection mechanisms.
In addition to the proposed law, at the proposal of the Parliamentary Commission for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms, a conclusion was passed that the FBiH Ministry of Justice should prepare the amendments to the FBiH Criminal Code on Protection of Women and Children from Violence, in accordance with the relevant conventions.
Upon a proposal by an MP Kenela Zuko, a conclusion was passed that a new law should be drafted in the Federation of BiH, which would include the entire system of protection of victims from violence.
Zuko believes that the current Law on Protection of Victims from Domestic Violence does not list all the rights of victims of domestic violence, and as a result lacks some basic rights guaranteed to victims of domestic violence under the Istanbul Convention, such as the right to information, the right to free legal aid, psychological assistance, adequate service for the protection of accommodation in safe houses, the obligation to perform a risk assessment during each report of domestic violence, in order to prevent new occurrences of violence.
