SARAJEVO, January 26 (FENA) - On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović sent a letter to the President of the World Jewish Congress Ronald Lauder, emphasizing that the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marked every January 27 to commemorate the entry of Red Army troops into Auschwitz and the liberation of camp survivors, is an opportunity to renew the memory of the victims of a crime unique in human history.
“Attending last year's 75th commemoration in the memorial complex, located on the site of the former Auschwitz concentration camp, I was deeply shocked by the testimonies of the surviving victims about the frightening monstrosities and executions of incomparable proportions carried out by Nazi criminals. The power with which the surviving victims preserved the memory of suffering, testifying in their own name, but also in the name of all those who did not receive freedom, obliges all nations around the world to preserve the memory of truth and to remember what happens when the dark shadow of evil hangs over helpless human beings,” Džaferović pointed out in the letter.
Seventy-six years later, he added, we can only feel hope that humanity will be redeemed through reflection, unreserved respect for human life, and effective efforts to finally stop the evil of genocide once and for all.
“Let me take this opportunity to thank you for the support that the World Jewish Congress continuously gives to the survivors and families of Bosniaks killed in the genocide in Srebrenica, with the aim of preserving the truth and achieving justice,” said Džaferović in a letter to Lauder.
