Izetbegović: I am not an enemy of the Serb people

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, January 25 (FENA) - I have long been accustomed to Serbian and politicians from the entity of Republika Srpska, as well as part of the media outlets to deliberately twist misinterpret my statements, in an attempt to present me as an "enemy of the Serb people", wrote today the leader of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Bakir Izetbegović on his official Facebook profile.

He added that he expected the same outcome after his latest call to stop supporting the xenophobic, chauvinistic and retrograde policies pursued by the leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) Milorad Dodik, which are directed against the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosniaks and Serbs who do not support his views.

"The reactions that followed, the names of the people and the way they reacted, just confirmed that I told the truth. Of course, I am not an enemy of the Serb people, I grew up with Serbs, and some of my best friends and close associates are Serbs. I do not accuse the entire Serb people of crimes and genocide," said Izetbegović.

He underlined that individuals are always to blame for crimes, but Serbs must ask themselves, he says, how come there are so many criminally oriented individuals among them, why they were allowed to do what they indisputably had done.

He believes that it is high time for the Serb people to face the truth because the crimes committed were not individual ones and at the level of incidents, tens of thousands of Bosniaks and Croats, someone's daughters and wives were raped, tens of thousands of civilians were killed, Bosniaks and Croats, who had previously went through horrible tortures in concentration camps and they were someone's sons, brothers and fathers.

"The enemy of Serbs is not the one who calls on them to face such truths. Their enemy is the one who keeps them in false beliefs. At one time, Milorad Dodik was ready to tell painful truths to his people to their faces, and then he changed the story, purposefully turned into a nationalist and chauvinist in order to get the political support of the voters," Izetbegović wrote.

He notes that he never changed his position and the things he said, regardless of the price, that he apologized for the crimes committed against Serbs by certain members of the BiH Army, visited Kazani in Sarajevo, and was exposed to attacks in the media because of that.

He called on Serbs to accept the truth, he did it in Sarajevo, but also in his official visits to Belgrade, he announced that he would continue to call on them to stop supporting those who keep lying to them which leads to new misunderstandings and conflicts.

"I call on Serb leaders, primarily Milorad Dodik, to recognize the genocide against Bosniaks and apologize on behalf of the Serb people, stop glorifying convicted war criminals and celebrate them as heroes, and to apologize for naming the Student Home in Pale after the convicted war criminal Radovan Karadžić and for decorating other convicted war criminals," noted Izetbegović in his post.

He urged Dodik to stop with chauvinistic insulting against Bosniaks and other people who disagree with him, including Serbs who do not support his politics, to stop celebrating the day the Serb parliamentarians decided to "territorially separate themselves from Bosniaks and Croats" and to allow Bosniaks and Croats in the RS entity to have the same rights as Serbs and to give Bosniaks in the RS entity the constitutional right to the Bosnian language.

"I urge him to stop pursuing a policy directed against the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and start respecting its institutions, stop pursuing a separatist policy and instead dedicate himself to building a state and society in which every human being, regardless of religion and ethnicity, would feel safe and equal," wrote Bakir Izetbegović.
