Bihać authorities have been instructed to re-open Bira center to house migrants

BIHAĆ, December 22 (FENA) - Members of the Operational Group for the situation with migrants in the Una-Sana Canton (USC) after today's meeting, confirmed that they have received instructions from the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina for the reopening of the Bira Migrant Center in downtown Bihać.

The Service for Foreigners' Affairs has been instructed to organize the temporary relocation of migrants and refugees currently housed in the Lipa camp to the recently closed Bira migrant camp, and to the Ministry of Interior of the Una-Sana Canton to ensure public order during the process.

"We welcome the decision to declare the Lipa camp an official migrant center, and it is a pity that it was not made at a time when this camp could have been adapted to sustain winter conditions.

We do not agree with the reopening of the Bira center, and the temporary relocation of the users of the camp services from the Lipa site to Bihać city center. We have already been deceived in this way once, so the city was literally overrun for two years. Also, this time all the usual procedures and regulations were circumvented during this procedure, and I primarily mean the consent of the City of Bihać, the USC Assembly, and the assessment of the security and health-epidemiological situation," said Cantonal Prime Minister Mustafa Ružnić.

Representatives of the city authorities strongly oppose the temporary relocation of migrants to Bira, until the end of the works in the camp at the Lipa site.

"The attempt to blame the citizens of Bihać and the USC for the situation at Lipa is utterly misleading. Had they proposed the relocation of these people to any other part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it would not have happened at any cost.

Water and electricity have not been installed at the Lipa site since April and the opening of the camp, so what are we to think now and how long it would take to enable the camp?

These instructions from today do not even offer deadlines, but they only stated that the situation would last until the construction works are completed. These are all provisional decisions and are completely unacceptable to us. The citizens of Bihać have had enough of this," said Edin Moranjkić from the City Administration of Bihać.

The members of the Cantonal Operational Group also announced the urgent convening of an extraordinary session of the Assembly of the Una-Sana Canton, for the representatives to decide on this issue.
