MOSTAR, December 20 (FENA) - The HDZ BiH president Dragan Čović at a news conference tonight said that the party would win 40 percent of the seats in the new convocation of the Mostar City Council.
He emphasized that the HDZ BiH received around 20,000 votes in today's elections, twice as many as it had in the last elections in Mostar held 12 years ago.
"That was our goal. I believe that with these 14 or 15 seats we will be able to find partners with whom we can have even a two-thirds majority, and certainly protect the position of the Croat people with a simple majority in the City Council. We want to transform Mostar into a modern European city, and I believe that there are enough partners in Mostar who think in a similar way about the future of the city," said Čović.
He noted that the time has come "for Mostar to be built on clear European foundations".
"I want to thank everyone who went to the polls, and especially to the voters of the HDZ BiH. I am deeply convinced that after these results, I can rightly say that the holder of the city list of the HDZ BiH for the City Council of Mostar and the candidate for mayor of Mostar, Mario Kordić will be the next mayor of this city," said Čović.
Commenting on the balance of power among the political entities from the ranks of the Croat people, the president of the HDZ BiH said that "the Croat parties may have recklessly entered these elections with four distinct lists".
