USAID is allocating USD 8.8 million to support human rights protection in BiH

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 17 (FENA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has launched a new program in Bosnia and Herzegovina to support the protection of human rights called "INSPIRE", for which 8.8 million US dollars will be allocated.

The goal of the program is for all levels of government to recognize and involve civil society organizations and citizens as necessary and respectable partners in policy development.

The program was announced at an online conference attended by representatives of the state ministries, USAID Mission Director in BiH Nancy Eslick, USAID/Inspire Program Director Jasmin Bešić, mayors and municipal mayors from several local communities in BiH, as well as some of the program beneficiaries.

"In the coming period, we will need all possible support from USAID and all our partners in order to realize the ambitious goals set in the action plan for equality of LGBTIQ people, whose adoption we expect in the first quarter of next year," said the Minister of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH Miloš Lučić and added that this action plan is the first of its kind developed in the institutions of BiH.

It was also underlined at the conference that human trafficking is a negative phenomenon that often has the characteristics of organized crime.

Through the program, USAID will work to empower citizens and government institutions to improve the overall protection of human rights, services, and employment opportunities for the most vulnerable population in BiH.

The program will also provide technical support to build the capacity of organizations and BiH institutions and to provide better services to marginalized citizens.

The USAID Mission Director in BiH Nancy Eslick said that the most vulnerable groups in BiH, such as members of the Roma national minority, people with disabilities and their families, but also women and children, as well as members of LGBTIQ communities, continue to face discrimination and lack of inclusion.

"Trafficking in human beings remains one of the biggest challenges the BiH authorities face. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country of origin, transit and destination for children and adults who are victims of human trafficking," said Eslick.

The main components of the Human Rights Protection and Promotion Program are: awarding grants to local anti-trafficking organizations that promote the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities, helping local communities create a sustainable model that will stimulate formal employment of vulnerable categories of women, LGBTIQ persons, and capacity building of USAID partners, institutions and government representatives to better protect the rights of those citizens who are underrepresented in public, said the USAID/INSPIRE program.
