Košarac: Only solution for meat surpluses is for BiH processors to buy them

SARAJEVO, December 16 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH Staša Košarac said today in Sarajevo that the only solution for market surpluses of meat is to buy them from BiH processors.

He reminded that several meetings were held with the representatives of the associations of primary agricultural producers, entity ministries, and meat processors, at which he was informed that there are surpluses in primary production.

“Representatives of the Federal Ministry stated that there are no surpluses in that entity, while the line ministry in RS keeps 10,000 bulls and fattening pigs in the register of incentive measures that are not in the slaughter phase, and we are convinced that there are no surpluses of that kind and that the situation is not alarming,” stated Košarac.

He added that meat processors from both entities offered cooperation and purchase, but that the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH could not define prices by law, which some are asking for.

“The Stabilization and Association Agreement entered into force in 2008 and in the negotiation phase it was then agreed that fresh and chilled meat could be imported at a customs rate of 0 percent, which is a problem. That agreement put primary agricultural producers in BiH at a disadvantage, but we cannot change international agreements,” said Košarac.
