Džaferović: Future of Bosnia and Herzegovina must be based on truth and justice

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, December 14 (FENA) - A narrative based on facts from international court rulings will always be above all attempts to establish anti-civilization narratives, so the facts from Hague verdicts should be constantly studied and repeated, said Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency member Šefik Džaferović as part of the online conference "Keeping peace, remembering victims".

As he emphasized, the Srebrenica Memorial Center, as a state institution, has the most important role in that process, and Džaferović paid tribute to the Mothers of Srebrenica, who have the greatest merit in the fight for truth and justice.

He reminded that this is the year in which the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica was marked in very difficult circumstances, caused by the coronavirus pandemic, but a commemoration and funeral for the victims of genocide was held in a dignified manner.

“In this context, I would like to express special gratitude to the mothers of Srebrenica, the Memorial Center and the Organizing Committee for the commemoration, as well as all those who contributed to the organization of this year's commemoration and funeral,” said Džaferović, adding that the fact that more than 40 world statesmen the world's interest in the greatest crime on European soil since World War II continues.

He stressed that the messages sent by the leaders from Srebrenica on July 11, primarily condemning the glorification of war criminals and denying genocide, have deep implications for Bosnia and Herzegovina's future, which must be based on truth and justice.

“The genocide in Srebrenica is one of the best documented crimes in history, thanks to the work of The Hague Tribunal. That is why we need to constantly study and repeat the facts from The Hague verdicts. The monograph Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide - The Message of Civilization also contributes significantly to that,” said Džaferović.

The publication "Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide: The Message of Civilization" was presented by the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center, and was published in Bosnian and English and includes messages from more than 40 world statesmen who addressed this year's July 11 commemoration the importance of remembering the victims of genocide and the duty to jointly fight the denial of genocide and to celebrate its perpetrators and perpetrators.

The publication also provides clarifications on the historical context of genocide, a calendar of relevant events related to July 1995 and the Srebrenica genocide, and a broader overview of the work of the Memorial Center and the Organizing Committee of this year's 25th anniversary.

The Memorial Center reminds that the speakers at this year's commemoration included Antonio Gutteres, Emmanuel Macron, Mike Pompeo, Boris Johnson, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Frank Walter Steinmeier, Giuseppe Conte, Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, Ursula von der Leyen, Justin Trudeau, Imran Khan, Pedro Sanchez, Alexander van der Bellen, Hasan Rouhani and many others.
